A Brighter Future: Artistic Activism And Climate Awareness

Awakening to a snow-covered landscape warms my heart. I used to hate cold weather, but as an artist, I've come to embrace it. It's an excuse to slow down, go outside and crunch around, and then come back inside and paint for a really long time. Gazing out on a pristine white canvas of snow helps me limit my palette and notice the "bones" of the landscape. Does an occasional snow day mean global warming is bunk? Of course not! I think we all know that by now. So a wintery morning makes me nostalgic for a time when snow was just "normal" (and a tad annoying).

I recently had the pleasure of curating an exhibit at Del Ray Artisans, "Art for Climate Justice: Visions of Resilience", which is on display until January 27. Sixty-five artists in the DC region came together to create work that is a catalyst for dialogue. The exhibit includes photography, painting, woodworking, weaving, and pottery - all forms of art that lead back to the earth. This inspiring body of work reminds us that art reflecting climate change and climate justice doesn't need to be an exploration of the ugly consequences of environmental challenges. Instead, it can be a celebration of the inherent beauty of our natural world, a reminder of what is at stake, and a call to action that resonates on a deeply personal level.
