What Inspires Me?

Encountering a vast and unexplored landscape feels both daunting and exhilarating. Will we give in to fear and turn around, or take a deep dive into the unknown and accept the outcome? Painting the landscape presents similar risks and challenges. A blank canvas provides an opportunity to build connections between the chaos of the outside world and the deeply human response it evokes. Sometimes my artwork is quite literal, capturing the light and beauty of a particular moment. Moving away from that moment, the work evolves into a more abstract representation of memory and emotion. Art can never truly replicate nature; we may only attempt to interpret it. My goal is to evoke a sense of connection, timelessness, and hope for the future.

About Camille

My artistic background stems from diverse influences and learning experiences. Growing up between the Blue Ridge Mountains and eastern seaboard, I developed a deep appreciation for the environment and an understanding of humanity's impact on it. My professional experience in international development and public health allowed me to explore different cultures and their environmental challenges. Additionally, my roles as a Master Gardener, Master Food educator, and beekeeper further deepened my understanding of the intricate connections between people and our surroundings. For many years, I worked as a Federal program analyst, and as a writer and photographer for horticultural magazines. These experiences brought me closer to the delicate ecosystems on which humankind relies, and ultimately inspired me to explore my creative curiosity through visual artwork.

I now work full time to create paintings that reflect humanity's connection with the earth. My studio, Wild Horizon, reflects my reverence for wilderness and hope for its future. Inspiration for new paintings often emerges through engaging intimately with a particular landscape. I hike, cycle, and kayak the land, as well as learning as much as possible about its history and ecology. I invite others to join me on this journey, to explore landscapes near and far, and to find inspiration and connection through my artwork.
