Small Abstract
There is something wonderfully demanding about working small. I can spend hours considering a passage of color no larger than a thumbnail, or discover that a single scraped line changes the balance of an entire painting. These small original abstract landscape paintings offer room to experiment with ideas gathered outdoors, from the colors of coastal fog to patterns found in stone, water, and woodland textures.
Working in acrylic, oil, cold wax, ink, and collage, I often incorporate hand painted papers and fragments reclaimed from earlier compositions. Some pieces begin as entirely new explorations, while others give overlooked materials another opportunity. Although these paintings measure no more than 12 by 12 inches, I approach them with the same curiosity and attention to composition as my largest works. Their scale rewards close looking and invites a more intimate encounter with the surface.
