Stone & Sediment
I am drawn to the history held inside rock. Along the Maine coast, granite bears the marks of ancient geological forces and generations of weather. In the mountains and desert landscapes of the West, exposed layers reveal the effects of pressure, erosion, and time. I often find myself examining a small fracture or band of sediment as closely as I would an expansive view.
My geological abstract paintings explore these surfaces through acrylic, oil, cold wax, and collage. I build up layers of paint and hand painted papers, then scrape, sand, and expose portions of what came before. Fragments shift, edges break apart, and unexpected structures emerge. The process allows me to explore the physical character of stone while leaving room for discoveries that have little to do with a recognizable landscape.
