Winter Wonderland: Texture, Sustainability, and Coastal Inspiration from Maine to California
This series of semi-abstract landscapes captures rugged natural environments through a layered process that begins with an acrylic base and builds into rich surfaces of oil and cold wax. By working with a limited palette of calm blues, golden yellows, warm white, and burn sienna, the "bones" of the landscape are revealed. Coastal landscapes are effected by wind, rain, sun, and snow. With this series, I aim to capture the subtle and beautiful transitions from one season to the next. Exploring two rugged environments coastal downeast Maine and central California coastlines, I begin with photography by lean into intuition to arrive at the final, semi-abstract compositions.
Upcycled, hand-made collage papers are embedded throughout each composition, adding texture, depth, and organic variation inspired by land shaped by wind, water, and time. The combination of translucent wax layers and bold mark-making creates a sense of movement across terrain while preserving moments of stillness. Grounded in an environmentally conscious approach, the work reflects both the resilience of the natural world and the value of reusing materials to honor and protect it.
